Original PlayStation memory card icons are really small — only 16 pixels square! That’s awfully tiny for today’s screens so I’ve created 2 versions of each icon: one at 32 pixels that is closer to the original size and a much larger one at 256 pixels
FUN FACT
Congratulations to Symphony of the Night for having one of the largest rosters of animated memory card icons across the entire PlayStation lineup! I played the opening scenes of the game dozens of times in pursuit of all sixteen different designs, checking if specific filenames or slots would consistently result in the same icons. Lo and behold, it seems to be totally arbitrary as to which icon you get.
Since each save only uses one memory card block, the European versions appear as static images outside of the game. But from within — when you’re on the main menu where you see and choose your save file — the icons appear fully animated. It must be a clever workaround as the animated files are still in the game and on the disc but for whatever reason (I’m still investigating!) they can’t be animated in European releases if the save file only use one block.
