What am I seeing here?
Original PlayStation memory card icons are only 16 pixels square! That’s very tiny for modern screens so I’ve created 2 versions of each: one at 32 pixels that’s close to the original scale and a much larger one at 256 pixels. FUN FACT
There are fewer icons compared to other Final Fantasy titles but SquareSoft still had fun by making it a bit maddening to find all four of these. This comment from Quad_Kuro on GameFAQs message boards was the most succinct explanation I could find:
“Vivi and Steiner are the common icons. Who you get is randomly chosen. If your save time ends on exactly 00 seconds (eg. 10:43:00), then the icon is Zidane. If your save time ends with exactly 00 minutes and 00 seconds (eg. 10:00:00), then it becomes Dagger.”
This is among the most specific methods to unlock unique memory card icons that I’ve found so far. Maybe not surprising, Square’s own Final Fantasy 1, found in Final Fantasy Origins, is still probably the most elaborate
