PS2IODB: A fantastic project collecting PlayStation 2 icons

One of the first questions I was asked when I started this site was if I was going to also collect memory card icons from PlayStation 2 games. While I have equally vivid memories of the delightful, low-poly 3D models and their unique animations, I knew it would be a much more technical process than I have the aptitude for. Fortunately, I don’t have to be dismayed over that particular shortcoming any longer!

The PlayStation2 Icons Open Database (PS2IODB) is a fantastic project founded by Issun that got started in 2023 to extract and collect PS2 game save icons. Through crowdsourcing efforts and some awesome homemade utilities the site has already amassed icons from 1,498 titles or just over 33% of the PlayStation 2’s massive library.

Just a small sample of what’s on the site

The site functions exactly as I’d dreamed my own would. Each entry features the full-screen, 3D, rotating icons that I remember so dearly from the early 2000s and you can even view the unique “Copy” and “Delete” animations. PS2IODB goes a step further and allows you to adjust the animation speed, change the background color, and even view the flat texture map, wireframe, and more.

Take a look for yourself and dig up some old favorites today! Maybe kick on some PS2 ambiance in the background for maximum effect. And if you want to help fill in the blanks, check out this page for steps on how you can contribute new icons (I’m hoping to provide at least a couple of my favorites over the holiday break).
